British forces ended four centuries of Ottoman rule in Jerusalem on December 9, 1917. Mayor Hussein al-Husayni sought to surrender the city peacefully to protect its religious sites from artillery. He initially offered the keys of the city to two British army cooks who were searching for water. The Mayor surrendered to several groups of low-ranking soldiers before General Edmund Allenby formalised the occupation. Allenby entered the Jaffa Gate on foot to show respect for the holy city. The photograph records the local officials and Ottoman dignitaries during this transition of power. This event redirected the political trajectory of the Levant and established the British Mandate.
