Doria Shafik established the Bint al-Nil Union in Egypt in 1948. The organization focused on women's suffrage and social welfare programs. Shafik also published a monthly magazine with the same title to promote literacy and political awareness. She led a protest of fifteen hundred women into Parliament in 1951 to demand the right to vote. This action secured voting rights for Egyptian women in the 1956 constitution.
